Pests are experts at hiding. By the time you actually see a mouse or a roach, there’s a good chance the infestation is already well established. The good news? Pests always leave clues — if you know what to look for.
Here are five early warning signs that you may have a pest problem in your home or business.
1. Droppings or Smear Marks
Rodent droppings are a telltale sign — look for small, dark pellets along walls, in cabinets, under sinks, and in attics or basements. Cockroach droppings look like black pepper or coffee grounds near food sources.
Rodents also leave greasy smear marks along baseboards and walls where they travel regularly. These marks come from the oils in their fur and are a strong indicator of active rodent activity.
2. Strange Sounds
Hearing scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds — especially at night when the house is quiet — is a classic sign of rodents in your walls, attic, or crawlspace. Mice and rats are nocturnal and most active after dark.
If you’re hearing sounds you can’t explain, don’t ignore them. Rodents breed quickly and a small problem can become a large one within weeks.
3. Gnaw Marks or Structural Damage
Rodents need to gnaw constantly to keep their teeth from growing too long. Look for chew marks on food packaging, wooden beams, drywall, electrical wiring, and pipe insulation. Damaged wiring caused by rodents is actually a significant fire hazard.
You might also notice small holes in walls or floors — entry points that rodents use to travel between rooms.
4. Shed Skins or Egg Cases
Cockroaches shed their skins (called exuviae) as they grow. Finding these — particularly in dark, warm areas like behind appliances or under sinks — is a clear sign of cockroach activity.
Bed bugs leave behind shed skins and small dark stains on mattress seams and headboards. If you’re waking up with unexplained bites, check your mattress carefully.
5. Unusual Pet Behavior
Dogs and cats are often the first to notice pest activity — especially rodents. If your pet is suddenly very interested in a wall, corner, or area under furniture, it’s worth investigating. They may be detecting movement, sounds, or scents that you can’t perceive.
What to Do If You Spot These Signs
The earlier you address a pest problem, the easier and less expensive it is to resolve. If you’re seeing one or more of these warning signs:
- Document what you’re seeing (photos help)
- Note the locations and frequency
- Avoid disturbing the area, which can scatter pests and make identification harder
- Call a professional for an inspection
